New Caledonia: Pro-independence and non-pro-independence supporters sign a “historic” agreement

Political representatives from the New Caledonian territory met in Bougival, in the Yvelines department, to reach an agreement. Details of the agreement have not yet been released.
An agreement has finally been reached. This Saturday, July 12, the pro-independence and non-pro-independence elected representatives of New Caledonia reached an agreement, having met for ten days at the "last chance" summit in Bougival in the Yvelines. "A historic agreement has been signed," the non-independence Loyalists and the Rally said in a statement. "Agreement signed. For a New Caledonia within France," commented Nicolas Metzdorf, a New Caledonian MP, on X.
For now, no details of this agreement have been released. Manuel Valls, Minister of Overseas Territories, is expected to clarify its contents soon. The summit was opened on July 2 by President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. A few days ago, Macron had proposed—among other options—the creation of an "associated state" with France.
